Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk learned this morning about a proposed partnership between Suncor Energy Ltd. and ATCO Ltd. for a clean hydrogen project near Fort Saskatchewan. This project is expected to create many jobs both locally and around the province. According to ATCO and Suncor, a decision is expected in 2024. “This is fantastic news for Fort Saskatchewan and all of Alberta as projects like this will help us diversify our energy mix, while creating hundreds of jobs coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Armstrong-Homeniuk.

“I second Premier Kenney when he mentions the high-end skill of our workforce and the innovative minds that we are fortunate to have in this riding, and all over Alberta. I look forward to sharing updates as the project takes shape. I will also be following up with the government regularly on the progress of this great project.” The province stands ready to fund up to 12% of capital costs for qualifying petrochemical projects through the Alberta Petrochemical Incentive Program (APIP). The hydrogen production facility would be located at ATCO's Heartland Energy Centre and could be operational as early as 2028, 

Quick facts (provided by Suncor and ATCO):
- This project would produce more than 300,000 tonnes per year of clean hydrogen to be used in refining processes as well as cogeneration steam and electricity production.
- Clean hydrogen will also be blended into Alberta’s natural gas supply, further reducing emissions.
- Advanced Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology will capture more than 90 percent of the emissions generated in the hydrogen production process.
- This project has potential to lower CO2 emissions by two million tonnes per year, or the equivalent of taking 450,000 cars off the road per year.
