Alberta is taking a hands-on approach to building its future workforce with the launch of a new skills centre designed to introduce students to careers in the skilled trades.

The Alberta Trades Discovery Centre, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the province, will give junior high and high school students the opportunity to explore construction trades in a practical, work-like environment. The centre is set to open in Calgary in fall 2026, with plans to expand to other regions over time.

The program aims to help students make more informed decisions about their education and career paths by allowing them to work directly with experienced tradespeople and gain early exposure to the industry.

Advanced Education Minister Myles McDougall said the initiative is an investment in Alberta’s long-term economic strength.

“Alberta’s prosperity depends on a strong, skilled workforce. The Alberta Trades Discovery Centre will help students see the real opportunities available in the trades.”

The centre will be guided by an industry-led board that includes representatives from major construction and labour organizations, reflecting a collaborative effort to address workforce needs.

According to the province, Alberta’s construction sector currently employs more than 250,000 people and is expected to require over 59,000 additional workers in the next decade.

The government has committed $6 million over three years to support the centre’s launch and early operations.

Unlike traditional apprenticeship programs, the Trades Discovery Centre will focus on career exploration, giving students a chance to try different trades in a realistic setting before making long-term commitments.

Officials say the initiative is intended to not only meet labour demands, but also provide young Albertans with access to stable, well-paying careers close to home.
