Tai Chi: An Ancient Art with Numerous Benefits

Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan, is an internal Chinese martial art which has grown in popularity over the past decades. Its numerous benefits including self-defense, relaxation, and physical strength, are what have driven practitioners worldwide to delve into the art. Colloquially it has become referred to “Meditation in Motion”. The earliest records of Tai Chi is in a text called ‘The Book of Changes” from over 3000 years ago. Since then it has been adapted and modified over the years into the styles we know today. There are five major styles of Tai Chi, each one named after the family from which it originated: • Chen Style • Yang Style • Wu Hao Style • Wu Style • Sun Style Each style, although similar, has a unique set of movements which are to be coordinated while keeping a clear mind. A study from Harvard University has concluded that although Tai Chi is slow and gentle, while practitioners are seldom strained or out of breath, it addresses the key components of fitness - muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and to a lesser degree aerobic conditioning. Although, Tai Chi is considered a martial art, practicing can be beneficial to people of any age or fitness level. The movements are slow and deliberate and result in minimal strain on muscles and joints. To get started it is recommended to find a Certified Instructor who will be able to provide guidance as well as monitor progress. However, classes are not always accessible to every area. For such situations, there are hundreds of instructors online, via YouTube and other official training websites. Whether it is to improve balance and coordination, or to reap the rewards of a calm and relaxed mind, tai chi is an excellent addition to any fitness routine.
